Our Approach

Evaluation

NODE builds capacity in responsive evaluation. This approach centers the experiences and outcomes of all students who participate in STEM education projects at HSIs along with the experiences and outcomes of people in the community, including faculty, campus support staff, family, and others. The approach is responsive to stakeholders’ knowledge and experience and invites them to share their perspectives at various stages of evaluation, be that in choosing evaluation questions, in designing instruments, or in making sense of data.

NODE grows the community of Principal Investigators and project staff who design and carry out projects that enhance education and prepare students for the STEM workforce. NODE engages evaluators of these projects, along with project leaders. NODE makes opportunities for the community to come together, share experiences implementing STEM education projects, develop skills, learn best practices, network, and form groups to convene and dig deeper.

To that end, we offer face-to-face workshops and webinars about evaluation planning and effective, responsive practices for HSIs. We hold office hours for one-on-one conversations. We facilitate coffee chats for networking and understanding.

Join us!

Join NODE webinars and workshops on improving evaluation of student outcomes in STEM education at HSIs. We deliver webinars on effective ways to evaluate HSI STEM ed projects and make time for participants to ask questions, engage with the content through chat and synchronous polls. We present face-to-face workshops for PIs and potential PIs who are new to project evaluation or seasoned consumers. Attendees have opportunities to talk about material with each other and make applications to their own projects. Past NODE webinars and workshops centered organizations’ designing environments to serve the variety of students who attend HSIs and crafting an evaluation to include multiple perspectives of students, faculty and campus community to inform project improvements. Check out our upcoming events.

Attend Coffee Chats to share experiences implementing or evaluating STEM education projects  in HSIs, network with attendees, ask questions, and compare learnings. Coffee  Chats happen monthly and focus on topics relevant to the NODE community.  Project leaders, potential project leaders, evaluators, project staff, and  other interested people are all welcome.

Coffee chats are  structured conversations, and the directions they take depend on the people  in the room. Coffee chats differ from the one-on-one conversations of office  hours where the person and/or team scheduling the meeting set the agenda.

At our first  coffee chat, we discussed what to think about when looking for an evaluator,  ways PIs found an evaluator for past HSI projects, and qualities of  relationships between PIs and evaluators. One PI recounted finding an  evaluator through networking: They clicked with an evaluator at a seminar,  discovered shared values around supporting students and later hired that  person to evaluate a project. Another PI reported trusting their project  evaluator, communicating transparently about struggles, and learning for  project improvement. Evaluators also join the conversation. One evaluator  affirmed the positive influence trusting PI-evaluator relationships had on  the evaluation process and recounted some downsides when trust lacked.

Meet with an expert evaluator, NODE’s Director of Evaluation Education, Dr. Michelle Burd with over 25 years of experience in NSF STEM education and HSI projects. Workshop a logic model for an upcoming proposal. Bring your questions about ways to assess student experiences with project activities using social science methods for evaluation. Discussideas about designing a project and the purpose of evaluation and more! You set the agenda.

Calling on Evaluators!
Join us in building a community of practice NODE is committed to enhancing evaluations of NSF-funded projects at HSIs by building a community that leverages our collective expertise.
We create space where evaluators can meet and facilitate building connections of value for members and their HSI STEM education projects. We create opportunities for evaluators to tell inspiring stories, expand their tools, and inform their practice evaluating STEM education projects at HSIs.
We are gathering contact information for evaluators of NSF-funded HSI projects.
